One of Indonesia’s top palm oil growers is launching a $100 million expansion of its plantations. Sinar Mas Group also says its activities are not damaging the environment. It says new plantation are opened on land previously logged or farmed on and does not cut down any part of the rainforest.

But environmental activists say that the company is harming the environment through deforestation.  Greenpeace Southeast Asia says Sinar Mas Groups’ destruction of the rain forest is creating climate chaos. It says that by destroying forests and peatlands the company is the main source of greenhouse gas emissions in Indonesia.

  2. Palm Oil is a form of edible vegetable oil obtained from the fruit of the palm tree. Previously the second-most widely produced edible oil, after soybean oil,it may have now surpassed soyabean oil as the most widely produced vegetable oil in the world. The palm fruit is the source of both palm oil (extracted from palm fruit) and palm kernel oil (extracted from the fruit seeds).
