Foreign Minister Abubark Al-Qirbi says the Houthi group was trying to attack government premises, occupy schools, blockaded roads and even govern certain territories according to Reuters.  The Foreign Minister also says things exploded after the government tried to call for dialogue  with the rebels in hopes of getting them to stop.

The rebels oppose the government’s alliance with the United States according to Reuters.  And say they are defending their villages against government oppression. The rebels belong to the Shi’ite Zaydi sect and want Zaydi schools in their area.

Clashes between the government and Houthi rebels has been intermittent since 2004. And the country which is one of the poorest in the Arab world is also dealing with violent secessionist unrest in the south and a growing threat from al Qaeda militancy.
