Election Polls Post-Presidential Assassination Open Sunday

Guinea Bissau will go to the special election polls on Sunday June 28th to vote for a new leader after the brutal March assassination of former President João Bernardo Vieira.

And although the President’s murder came just hours after the army chief of staff was killed in a bomb blast, the military did not abuse its power by taking control of the country according to political experts.

Earlier this month the independent presidential candidate Baciro Dabo and a former minister were killed by state security agents for allegedly resisting arrest for their alleged involvement in a coup plot.

Guinea Bissau is the major transit point for cocaine shipments into Europe.
