President Obama Chose Words Wisely Hoping to Bring Peace

As a president candidate  Barak Obama promised that if elected he would recognize the massacres and injustice during WWI inflicted on over 1.5 million Armenians in Turkey as genocide.

When in Turkey, mindful of ongoing diplomatic negotiations between Armenia and Turkey, President Obama made the choice to avoid using the word “genocide.”

International reaction to this decision are mixed.

US Agenda according to Onnik Krikorian:

– Turkey’s backing is important in Iraq and Afghanistan

-Turkey’s ability to possibly counterbalance Russia’s influence in the South Caucus is needed

Armenian Agenda according to Onnik Krikorian:

seek international recognition of genocide

-for some validation of demands for territorial reparations

-opening of borders between Turkey and Armenia

International Agenda according to Onnik Krikorian:

– regional stability

peaceful solution to Armenian-Azeri conflict

– For some a historical comission to examine genocide
