The United Nations has accepted a new resolution which classifies “defamation of religion” as a human rights violation. The text is part of recent efforts by the UN to broaden the concept of human rights to protect communities (and in this case communities of believers) rather than individuals.
One hundred eighty media groups were urging media groups against the text. They say it may be used by certain countries to silence and intimidate independent voices and ultimately restrict freedoms.
The non-bind text received twenty three votes in favor, eleven against, and thirteen abstentions.
