The Brazilian Supreme Court (STF) has ruled in favor of five indigenous groups after a the thirty year battle to reclaim their land. The court awarded the tribes their 1.7 million hectares of land in the Amazon along the border of Venezuela and Guyana.

3,000 Indigenous people gathered to watch the proceedings in the presence of national guards on duty prior to the verdict being read. Tensions have existed between tribes and local farmers because of the dispute.
