The Zambian air force is preparing to airlift people to safety from the flood water caused by heavy rains. The President has placed the military in Zambia on high alert and ordered cooperation between governmental and aid agencies to cope with the highest water levels since 1969.
The country’s Road Development Agency says that the recently rebuilt road between Zambia, Zimbabwe and the rest of South Africa is submerged slowing the countries copper exports.
Countless damage to crops and housing would devastate the food supply if the flood water reaches lower Zambezi, as experts have predicted.
The worst flood happened in 2000-2001 when seven hundred died and half a million were left homeless.
