There has been a surge in sponsorship requests of Indian children in the UK according to poverty fighting, non-profit group Action Aid. It says this surge occurred after the movie ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ won the Oscar. Normally, the UK places approximately 500 child sponsorship enquirers a week. Fund raising Director Richard Turner says Action Aid is calling the recent surge to approximately 1,4000 enquirers a week the ‘Slumdog’ effect .

The Slum Dwellers Joint Action Committee of India is boycotting the film due to the derogatory and abusive usage of the word “dog”to refer to slum dwellers.

There have also been complaints that child actors turned stars, who were plucked from the slums for the movie, were exploited
