A Giant electronic corporation has unveiled the first ever solar powered mobile phone at Mobile World Congress show in Barcelona. Samsung says the new Blue Earth mobile phone is being made from recycled plastic bottles and does not the environmentally damaging Brominated Flame Retardants, Beryllium or Phthalate.
The phone has an energy conservation mode option which saves energy by reducing screen brightness and backlight use. The phone will also feature a pedometer displaying carbon saved by walking as opposed to driving.
Samsung did not say how much energy the solar panels will generate. The phone will come with a main charger suggesting that solar panels may be used to top up charging.
Media bureau for news of all things green, Businessgreen says a number of solar powered charging units are currently available on the market, but manufacturers of handheld electronics are running to win the race to launch products that will not need recharging.
