Prime Minister Geir Haarde  is stepping down from office, and says he wants Iceland to have an early election on May 9th as opposed to waiting till 2011.  The Prime Minister has faced increasing pressure from his citizens since the country’s economic collapse. The announcements comes two days after reports of a media censorship attempts began to surface.

Kristjan Logason, a freelance photographer, says that on Thursday, Icelandic police used pepper spray against him and at least seven other working journalists who were covering peaceful demonstrations in front of parliament. He says that journalists were targeted because police didn’t want the world to know that peaceful protests demanding that the government responsible for the economic collapse step down were taking place. Logason is outraged that such an incident has taken place in a democratic society.
