According to IRIN, Issa Mohamed, president of the Health Management Committee (COGES) says that almost two year after after the first ever HIV awareness campaign in the Sam Ouandja, Central African Republic (CAR), those who tested positive have yet to receive counseling, medication or any HIV/AIDS service of any kind. Reportedly, Yacynthe Wodobode, national coordinator of the National AIDS Council (CNLS), says that CNLS’s 2007 awareness campaign has helped to set up voluntary HIV testing centre. She says that counseling, antriretrovial drugs (ARVs), and treatment of opportunistic infections are the biggest issues in the aftermath of a campaign whose goal was to estimate local needs in the country. CAR has the highest HIV prevalence rate in Central Africa with more than 6.2% of its population thought to be HIV positive. There are 33 physicians to every 1,000 people in a country with a population of approximately four million.
